BOOK REVIEW

The book I chose for this project is called 30 days of night. The book is also based on my favorite movie. The author of the book is Tim Lebbon. I chose this book because of my fascination with vampires and how they create chaos. I decided to get this because of the intriguing cover and I saw the movie before so I wanted too see if the book was even better.

The main characters name is Eben Olsen. The story takes place in a little town called barrow Alaska which is the northernmost town in the USA. Every year in December till January the sun goes away and it leaves the town for 30 days of night. All communication is cut off for hundreds of miles and the closest airport is shut down for that period of time. A group of vampires found this town and have a whole feast on everyone. Almost everyone died. These vampires are different than most. There teeth aren't fangs, but in fact shark like. There eyes are pitch black and they have speed and strength. They also are very vicious and don't give mercy. They kill anyone in there way. So basically for 30 days… the vampires will never stop until the sun comes up.

My favorite quote was by a prisoner in barrows prison. He was half human half vampire. The vampires sent him to spy first. He way lying down in the cell and he said "board the windows, lock the doors, try to hide… their coming…" Eben then said "they?.. Who are they..." and then the lights in the cell switch off.

My rating system is 1 through 10. 1 is super poor and 10 is amazing. I rated this book an 8 and a half out of the system. It had some strange parts such as a polar bear wandering into town and then the vampires kill it. But otherwise than that the book was superb.

I would recommend this book to twelve year olds and up. This book is a little scary and is very intense. It does have many bad words and has some graphic sayings. And graphic pictures. But I say this book is very good and many scary movie lovers would enjoy this very much.

The People of Sparks

The book I read is called The People of Sparks by Jeanne Durau. The reason I choose to readThe People of Sparks was because of the cover. It is really pretty and symbolic. I then found out it was the second book in a series of four. I then bought the first book to read, so I could start from the beginning of the series.

My book is about two characters, Lina and Doon, who have just lead their people out of a closed off, underground city, and into the world. Upon entering the world, they nothing about, society has gone backwards to a more primitive time because of a war. Lina and Doon comes upon a village that agrees to help them but, soon after, conflict arises. Now Doon and Lina have to stop the threat of a war, between the people of Ember and the people of Sparks, lead by the influences of a boy named Tick.

"Fine" said Maddy......"If you ask me, making friends is a better defense then making enemies."I felt that this saying is significant because it's telling you that what is the point of making enemies when it's just going to hurt you in the end. The reason Maddy said this was because a man named Caspar stated that he believed in approaching a stranger like a enemy to protect himself. Maddy felt that making more enemies then friends, was a stupid way to carry out life.

Out of 17 seeds I give this book a rating of 15 seeds. The reason I give it a rating of 15 seeds is because I loved the story line, and thought the characters were realistic. Even so, I felt a little disappointed with one resolution dealing with treasure. I felt it could have been better and didn't live up to it's full potential. The reason I used seeds as my rating system is because on the cover, it is a picture of a sprout. I felt that the seed and sprout represented the starting of a civilization, which is exactly what this book is representing.

I recommend this book for anti-war people. It deals with war (not the war specifically) but the effects

afterwards. I believe this book is recommend for people of all ages. Though, I believe that the older you

the more you'll get out of it. It is also people who like adventure for it has its owe share of it. Lastly I feel

that this is a book about civilizations and tolerance of other people. It shows you just how foolish a fight

over an egg might be, and how it all starts with a push and ends with a mess.

Over the summer, I read a book, which monumentally changed the way I thought about life. What Is The What by Dave Eggers. The story of me selecting this book isn't that exciting. I did what I always did, walked into Barns and Nobel and asked them what they recommend. When they showed me the book, I wasn't that excited about it, but as soon as I read the preface it was IMPOSIBLE to put down.

This book starts out in the present and slowly fades into the past. Valentino is at home, a 20-30 year old man, when there is a knock at the door. Having no reason not to answer it, he does. There is a woman asking to use the phone, he watches her until she goes into his room, and locks the door. When he turns to close the door he is being assaulted at gunpoint, robbed, and beaten until all he can see goes black.
    Slowly as the story proceeds he begins to tell the tragic stories of crossing Sudan, and the murder of his family, his best friend, and the one he loved. When he was but a boy he lived in Mariel Bai, a small village in southern Sudan. Everything was all right until the Murahaleen arrived and attacked. They killed everyone, burned down the village, raped the women, and poisoned the wells; leaving them with nothing. Their only chance to survive was to escape.
    As the story slowly unravels he tells the story of how he had to walk day and night to get to their "promise land", Ethiopia. Thousands of boys, walked, with little to eat or drink. Some boys were weak and were left behind, some died of terrible disease, some bombed, and lost in the dead of night.
The stories of the travels of the Lost Boys are epic, and unlike anything you've ever read. Not only does it tell in detail the feelings and imagery of the walking, but of the thousands of boys left abandoned, hungry, thirsty, and dead. They were all wishing for Ethiopia, their promise land that they would never set their eyes upon.

"He drops the book. It is the first time in my life that I have seen something coming toward me and have been unable to properly react. I try to turn my head but still the book lands squarely on my face. The pain is compounded by my existing headache and the ricochet my chin makes against the floor. The phone book slides off, toward my forehead and rests there, against my temple. Thinking he has accomplished his goal, he returns to the kitchen and the volume goes up again. This boy thinks I am not of his species, that I am some other kind of creature, one that can be crushed under the weight of a phone book.
The pain is not great, but the symbolism disagreeable."
    I believe that this quote has the most importance in the entire book, not only does it show the discrimination against the character, but it symbolizes how people can be so cruel to someone that's not of their skin color, or race, or size, just for the way they look. I believe the author put it perfectly when he says; "…The pain is not great, but the symbolism disagreeable."

Rating (out of 5):

I choose the sun to represent how Valentino had to walk through the blistering hot sun to get to Ethiopia.

I would DEFINATLY recommend this book to anyone. Why? Well here are 3 reasons:
1.    It has such an intense and beautiful insight into life.
2.    It especially concentrates on the issue of discrimination in a way no one has herd before.
3.    It tells about an unheard of war and the seize of Mariel Bai, all through a Childs eye.
Cautions:
Cussing, some sexual references, Descriptive gory scenes.

Hatchet

I read a book called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I selected this book because I liked the other book that I read by Garry Paulsen which was Brian's Hunt. I read hatchet because one of my teachers suggested it to me. I like books with lots of detail and description.

There aren't very many characters in Hatchet. Brian Robeson is the main character in the book. He is a thirteen-year-old boy who had a hard time coping with the fact that his parents are going through a divorce. Brian's mother wants a divorce because she is having an affair with another man. Brian's father doesn't want the divorce and doesn't know about the affair. Jim or Jake is the pilot of the airplane that is taking Brian to see his father. During the flight the pilot has a heart attack and Brian is forced to fly the plane until it runs out of gas and then crashes in Canada. The main conflict in the book is survival because Brian has to survive by himself. He has to find food, water, and shelter and all he has is a hatchet.

I chose the quote "I'm tough where it counts—tough in the head." because you have to keep a positive attitude, keep trying to be rescued. You have to be strong so you don't go crazy when you are all alone in the wilderness with nobody to talk to. If you stay calm and focused then you can find solutions to everything.

I rate the book four and a half stars. Five stars would be a book that you can't put down so you read it really fast. Four stars would be a book that is awesome and really fun. Three stars would be average. Two stars would be not the best book. Finally one star would be boring and not a good book. I really liked the detailed descriptions. It was really interesting.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes the great outdoors. It teaches people how to survive alone in the Canadian wilderness with only a hatchet and light clothing. I do not recommend this book to people who are very easily grossed out.

Life as We Knew It

The book I read is called Life as We Knew It. This book was written by Susan Pfeffer. I decided this was going to be the book I was going to write about, because this is one of the books I've enjoyed reading most. There are many other very nice books that I've read, but I chose this one because it's special. It's a great story, very captivating and will have the reader want to read more every time they stop.

This is the story about life when an asteroid hits the moon and knocks it out of its orbit, bringing it closer to the Earth. Miranda, the main character tells the story from her point of view. She talks about at first, when the moon looked closer and a lot bigger, so many people panicked. They didn't know what was going on, and they thought they were going to die. They didn't know what was to come. Since the moon controls the tidal waves, there were floods and tsunamis happening all after each other. It was all a huge disaster. There were so many tragedies of people dying one by one, day by day.. There was chaos on the streets and food supplies were running very low. People didn't have much to eat as rainstorms and blizzards got worse. Everyone suffered and it was all about surviving this massive disaster.

There were many important parts in the story and I personally think that this quote had some importance to the story. "Will things EVER get back to normal?" was what Miranda had stated in her diary. I believe that this was important because it shows how much things changed and how desperate she is to get out of that dangerous mess only to get back to her normal life. Things had drastically changed that she thought it would never go back to being a normal world. Apart from all the danger she was in, she just wanted life to be the way it had been before all the bad things happened.

The rating system I will use to rate this book will be based on moons. I chose the icon to be moons because the book is about all the danger that the moon caused to the world after the asteroid hit it. The most amount of moons you could give is five being excellent, and 1 the least, being rated as poor/very boring. I myself, would give this book 4 moons . I thought the book was great and it kept me interested until the end.

Life as we Knew It, was really a very nice book. I would recommend it to teens in my age group, such as from 12-16 years old. I do believe that other kids who read this book will like it as much as I did. It's a book that will make you want to keep reading until the end. For anyone who decides to read this book, it's a great choice and be ready to read a great novel.

Among the Hidden

Hello, my name is Adrian J and I read the book Among the Hidden.I chose to read this
book because I wanted to read a book about a kid who is illegal.This book is about a kid who is forbidden by the
government. He spends his whole life hiding,and he is very lonely and has never had a friend.One day he looks out
the window and meets a third child like himself,her name is Jen.

"He liked to forget he was Luke Garner,third child hidden in the attic" (Among the Hidden,
Pg.33).The conflict of the story is that Luke wants to find a way to get out of hiding.When Luke's in hiding,he
litteraly has to be invisible for ANYONE (except his family) to see him. Finnaly, he finds a resolution, he meets
a young girl like him. A third child.

I overall thought that this book was excellent (star rating:4.6).It didn't have the best
story,but the suspense was pretty intense. I would recommened this book to readers who want a good book to read.
This is probably not a good book for young readers to read.This book is in probnably many bookstores and libraries
near you.

The Hunger Games

The book is written by Suzanne Collins. The name of the book is The Hunger Games. It is mostly about a girl named Katniss that had taken her sisters place in the games. The book describes what Katniss has to go through before the games start especially the opening ceremonies. The open ceromonies are for the tributes to represent their district. Two kids are chosen from each disrict it is also supposed to be a girl and a boy. The two kids have to be between ages 12 and 18. But are chosen randomly by the govenment. Did i mention that once the games start everything is shown on the T.V. becauseit is a live T.V. show. And in order yo win each player has to kill each other.

"I need to get down , to get going , but for a moment i lie there , digesting what ive heard. Not only is Peeta with the the Careers, hes helping them find me. The simpleminded girl who has to be taken seriously because of her 11. Because she can use a bow and arrow. Which Peeta knows better than anyone." This is a quote directly from the book that says the main problem of the book.

The book was really good. I liked it because it is iinteresting on what Katniss is seeing in the game. It is really brave to see bodies laying on the ground before being picked up. I would recommend the book to readers that enjoy reading action and a little romance every now and then. But action is mostly involved.

Hunger Games

I chose The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins because the plot sounded really fascinating. My teacher at Millikan Middle School, Ms. Bennett suggested it and I really liked it.

The Hunger Games takes place in a country called Panem, which used to be North America. In Panem there is the Capital and surrounding it are twelve districts. The people of the Capital are cruel and sadistic. They created something called The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games is a game where a boy and a girl from each district who are called tributes, are called to an arena to fight to the death. The last person alive and his district are awarded great wealth. The tributes are aged twelve to eighteen. When you turn 12 your name is entered in a sort of a lottery, and every year your name gets entered again until you turn 18, this is how the tributes are chosen.

The main character's name is Katniss and she is the girl tribute of district twelve. Katniss is 16 and she's a hunter, she hunts in the woods just outside of the district to feed her sister, Prim, and her mother. Here is a quote from the book, "I pull on a thick, fleecy nightgown and climb into bed. It takes about five seconds to realize I'll never fall asleep. And I need sleep desperately because in the arena every moment I give in to fatigue will be an invitation to death. It's no good. One hour, two, three pass, and my eyelids refuse to get heavy. I can't stop trying to imagine exactly what terrain I'll be thrown into. Desert? Swamp? A frigid wasteland? Above all I'm hoping trees, which may afford me some means of concealment and food and shelter" Katniss, page 141. Throughout the book in her struggle for survival Katniss must find or fight for food, supplies and weapons so she will be better prepared to win in the end. From the starting line, the Tributes race for the Cornucopia where they will find many supplies. Many of the Tributes die the first day in this struggle for supplies. In the arena Katniss has to fight a Tribute from district 9 over a backpack full of supplies. This book is about Katniss trying to survive in the Games.

The Hunger Games is an amazing book. I like this book because it shows how far a person will go to survive. I highly recommend it.

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins

For my book report I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I thought The Hunger Games was so amazing because it had so much detail and it was filled with action and drama. It is about this girl Katniss who lives in District 12 with her mother and her little sister Prim. And her family is very poor and her and her friend Gale go out hunting so Katniss can feed her family. And every year for all the 23 districts, they do an even called the Hunger Games. This is where they pick a boy and a girl from each district and they take them to an arena and they have to survive in the middle of basically nowhere and they also basically have to kill everyone to win. So whoever is the last one living wins and gets to go back to their district. In district 12 though they have only had one winner from along time ago named Haymitch who pretty much helped them get prepared for the games. Though at the reaping which is where they pick the people's names for the Hunger Games, Prim, Katniss's 12 year old sister, gets picked which leaves Katniss in total shock. Unexpectedly, Katniss runs up the stage and volunteers to switch with Prim. Though Prim still doesn't want her to go but Katniss wants to do it for her sister. But then, they had to pick the boy, and the boy who got picked was Peeta, the last one who came up to Katniss's mind. She kept on thinking to herself, "Why Peeta!? Why him?" This was because when Katniss's family was starving to death, and Peeta didn't even know her, he gave her a piece of bread. And the only time they have seen eachother was at school. Though now Katniss was worried that she had to owe him something now. It gets very suspenseful wondering what their relationship will be like at the games. When they start heading for the training place, they are offered with tons of food, which leaves Katniss very happy unlike at District 12 where they have minimum offerings of food. Then after all the training they had done, they had to show the Career Tributes how good they were and they were going to announce in TV their scores. Katniss was the last one to go, after Peeta, though when she went she thought she ruined the whole thing because she though the career tributes were paying more attention to the food they had. So then she aimed her arrow to the apple on the table and made it right in the middle of the apple which left the career tributes shocked and staring at her. Then she left. Next day she was waiting nervously for the score. Ends up, she got the highest score! They ended up liking her attitude. Then after all the interviews, they were ready to go to the arena and start the Hunger Games. They found out the arena took place at a place where they sloughter pigs. Though they basically made it look like a forest. When they went in they were placed on a silver platform waiting for the horn to play which meant the games started. Though infront of them, a few feet away, were a bunch of stuff to survive. When the horn rang, everyone started killing eachother over everything! Though Katniss managed to get some things. Though that's when all the action started! I will not say everything that happened because I don't want to spoil it but it was really good. Though it was so suprising when the host announced that a whole tribute can come back together and not just one single person! Though the one twist Peeta and Katniss had to do was that they had to pretend they were in love to get a lot of sponsors. Its gets suspenseful every chapter. I basically cried when I was reading! Though I am giving part of the end away… They won! But there is more after that! So if you love drama and action then read this book cause it awesome!

Among The Hidden

I read the book Among The Hidden by margaret Haddix. I chose Among The hidden because it was my second choice on the last book report .Also, when I read the description it seemed interesting.

My book is about a time when the government enforced couples to have only two children. Parents who were found to have more than two kids would have to give the third child to the government where they would be killed. Luke Garner was the third and youngest child. Luke had two brothers. Unlike his brothers, Luke has never been to school or even outside. He lived in the attic of their home like a prisoner. Luke was a "shadow child." Luke had to hide every day, all day and all night. All Luke was able to do each day is read.

One day when everyone had left, he saw a face in a house across the way. After a few days, Luke sneaks over to the house and opens the screen where he meets Jen, another shadow child. Startled at being seen herself, Jen knocks him over and asks who he is and where he lives. They soon become friends and confidants, due to the fact they both live the same type of life. Luke sneaks over periodically where he learns abot a chat room of hundreds of other shadow childred. Jen then tells him about a rally that all the shadow kids that she knows where they are planning to protest. Until the day before the rally they don't talkt. Luke is terrified of the reprecussions to him and his family if he attends the protest and in the end he doesn't go. He knows he would be killed.

After the rally Luke goes to Jens house and Jens dad threatens to kill luke. Then the population police knocks on the door. Jens dad then throws Luke into the closet. When the poplation police get in the house they don't start looking they talk to Jens dad because he is part of the population police. Luke gets to the back of the closet there is no door like Jens father said but as the population police open the door Luke hides underneath a blanket. The police don't look hard so they don't find Luke. After the poplation police leave Luke gets ot of the closet and waits a little bit because the population police will check Lukes house.

The book I read is called The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.This book is about a 16 year old
old girl named Katniss living in a country named Panem.Panem is the ruins of North America in
the future.There are 12 districts in Panem including the Capitol that rules the districts.Every year

when he was in a mine.It ends up happening that Prim gets chosen to be in The Hunger Games.
Then Katniss volunteers to be in The Hunger Games so that Prim doesnt have to go.I picked
this book becuase when i read the summary of it I just couldn't deny reading it.I mean it has
romance,action,adventure,suspence, and survival you just can't put this book down.
A quote from the book that shows Katniss' major conflict is when she says " I twist and scuttle
backwards on my hands and feet,shrieking, trying to remove myself from the horror."This part
is when Katniss is in the The Hunger Games(in the woods)and her knee got hit by a fire ball.
Her knee is scorching with pain as she tries to get away from the wall of fire that throws the
the fireballs.When she gets to water she puts her knee in it,it soothes the pain from the knee
thats bloody.She learned to put water on watever part of her body was burned when she
used to make fire in the fireplace for warmth.
Honestly I loved this book I couldn't put this book down.The Hunger Games leaves readers hungry
for more.This book has a lot of suspence, it keeps readers wondering.I would recommend
this book to people who love action,adventure,a little romance, and suspenceful packed book.
Trust me The Hunger Games is like nothing you have read in a long time.

The Hunger Games

I chose the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, because the plot of the book sounded very interesting to me. This book is about a country called Panem , which is what is left of North America after a war. Panem is broken up into 12 districts. You follow the journey of a 16 year old girl named Katniss living in district 12 (a mostly poor district). She has struggles to support her mother and 12 year old sister Prim, after her father dies. She has to hunt (which is illegal) to support her family. When the annual reaping comes along that's when she really has to fight for her life. Children from the ages of 12 to 18 are entered into a drawing that will determine which boy and girl compete in The Hunger Games. In The Hunger Games the 24 kids chosen, fight in a battle against each other, last one standing keeps their life and gets more food for their district. Prim gets chosen in the drawing, but Katniss steps up as a loving sister to take her place. Katniss then goes on a journey where there is survival, romance, and many other hardships.
A quote that shows Katniss's major conflict is: "Every sense I have goes into overdrive as the need to survive takes over." (The Hunger Games ,pg.175). Katniss has to put all her effort into surviving. Any sudden motion can bring death. Her mind has to be alert at all times. She also has to provide herself with food and water. There is major stress put on her, knowing she could die at any moment. She has to be ready to move if she spots an enemy. Katniss is in the wild all on her own, and as more and more people die, it makes it harder to hide. The girl has to plan every move with care. She wants to make it back home to her sister and mother, so winning the games is very important.
I loved The Hunger Games because it was so exciting. The book was very surprising and it was hard for me to put it down. It combined action with a bit of romance. You fall in love with the book in the first chapter. It doesn't take long for the action to start. I wold recommend this book to anyone who loves an action packed page turner. If you like exciting books that are fiction you will love The Hunger Games.

Life As We Knew It

"Life as We Knew It" by Susan Beth Pfeffer is the book that I chose for my blog. I chose that book because a lot of my friends have read it, and said it was a good book. This book is mostly about a girl named Miranda and her diary, and how it tells about her family's survival after a meteor knocks the moon closer to earth. In the girl's diary, It tells about how hard it was to survive with little amounts of items, such as food. It also talks about how different it was to live with all of the changes that had happened.
"It was terrifying, and you could feel the panic sweel all around us."(Life as We Knew It, pg. 19) The problem in this paragraph is that the after the meteor hit the moon, everyone was scared and worried. People started driving away. Other people began praying. One household began singing "The Star Spangled Banner".
Yes, I really liked the book. I liked it because I've always wondered what would happen if something happened to the moon. Now I have some ideas of what could happen. I would recommenend this book to someone who likes Science fiction.

Pretties

i chose this book because i was reading uglies and i want to read the rest of the series. The book is mainly about a girl named tally living the life of a pretty. She climbes buildings rides hoverboards and finds love. This is the type of book that has every thing in it. Romance, action, suprise, and so much more! "David?" she said softly. While tally is in the pretty world David is not with her. David is a old friend of Tally's back in the smoke. Tally is surprised to see David because they haven't seen each other for a little over a year. When she gets there and hears his voice she automatically knows it is him. I loved the book a lot! In the first few chapters it is a little boring. Once you get to part 2 it starts to get really exciting. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to be off there seat when reading. I would also recommend this book to people who like a little bit of everything.This book was wonderful but sometimes it is hard to understand what they are talking about.

Among the Impostors

I read this amazing book that's called Among the Imposters by Margaret Peterson Haddix
It is the second book of the shadow children series. The book is about a boy named Luke
Garner. In this time period, parents can only have two children. If they have a thrid child
there only punishment is death.And Luke is an illegal thrid child. So in this story Luke
garner gets a fake I.D and is sent to Hendricks school for boys. While he is there he meets
a friend but he's not sure if he could trust him to tell him.....

The quote that made a major confilct to Luke Garner in the story was," 'Offering a
challendge' Luke said aloud, and then he stepped out from behind the tree."(Among the
Imposters,pg.86).This is an important quote because If Luke wouldn't have come out of the
tree he would have not meet his friend. And almost all of the story is about his friend and
Luke.
Like I said this is an amazing book, but only if you read the first book!(If your
wondering what the first book it is Among The Hidden.) If your into a story with a lot of
suspense this is the right book for you.I recommend this book because you will really like
how it is well written and you can completely understand it. Even 4th graders can read this
and understand it. Read this book! And don't miss reading Among the Betrayed!

A Wrinkle in Time

The journey of reading this miraculous book began in 5th grade when it was introduced to my class by a parent. We only read a few pages when we were unfortunately interrupted. When I saw this book on the booklist I knew this was the one I wanted to read. This book begins with children in a house at somewhere around midnight, most are asleep except for the eternal goofball named Meg. This family is the Murry family consisting of a Meg, her very smart brother Charles the twins named Denny and Sandy and their parents. The plot of the book centers around a journey where Meg, Calvin, and Charles are attempting to find Mr. Murry who has disappeared when he was on a trip to study the fifth dimension of time travel.

The quote I think explains the conflict in A Wrinkle In Time is in the part when IT, a brain is controlling all off Camazotz and sadly Charles Wallace has been caught in IT's mind too. Meg is trying to figure out what she has that IT does not have. IT has everything Meg thinks, IT has a huge brain, a town and everything else you could ever want. She just stands there thinking deeply until she finally gets an idea, IT does not have love, he does not have love. This reverberates through her head until she has an idea, if she puts as much as she can into her love it might destroy IT and save Charles Wallace. So with tears dripping out of her eyes she yells "I love you Charles! I love you! I love you! I love you!" (A Wrinkle In Time, pg. 208)

A Wrinkle In Time centers around a timeless battle. The battle between good and evil. This book will fill your soul and let your mind run free. You will want to set your mind free again to hear the miraculous story of A Wind In The Door. You'll be wondering can Meg defeat the forces of evil that is yet to come. We'll find out in the sequel A Wind In The Door. A Wrinkle In Time would be recommended to anyone from the ages of 11 to adult that love adventures ,high suspense and survival encounters. I think everyone that reads this book will cherish it for the rest of their lives! At least I know I will.
