Elsewhere-Avetisyan, Ane

Avetisyan Ane

Period 4 English

The book that I read is called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. When Mrs. Huff gave us this assignment I went and picked a book called The Letters which I didn't enjoy so automatically went to the library to exchange it. I asked the librarian if she recommend some books there was two that really liked it was one about fairies and this book Elsewhere. So I sat there and opened each book from the middle and read it. It was tough decision but somehow I knew that Elsewhere was the one. It also had a really nice cover which helped a lot.
This book was about a young fifteen year old girl name Liz who gets in a dramatic bicycle accident. When she wakes up she find herself on the lower bunk of a bunk-bed. She also finds that she is on a cruise ship. On the top bunk is a girl about her age named Thandi. Thandi tries to explain what is going on, where she is, but she also wants her to figure it out by herself. She does when she is sent to the OD (observation Deck). She had a feeling about where she is but she couldn't believe it. She was dead. Once the ship stops at Elsewhere it doesn't make a return. Elsewhere is a where people go after they die. It is a lot like Earth except everything is dead and instead of getting older you age backwards until seven months. Liz isn't happy to be repeating the last fifteen years of her life again, but it doesn't turn out to be so bad after all. Liz meet a lot of interesting people there like her grandmother Betty who she never had seen before, and Curtis Jets her favorite singer, she also falls in love with one of her friends Owen. Before all of this she would be very depressed and was trying to find who killed her to let her family know. Then she realized even if she did tell her family. The man being in jail wouldn't bring her back to life. So she finally decided to give it a break and just enjoy being dead. She got a job at the animal shelter and even adopted a dog herself. She also learned to drive. Liz made her time in Elsewhere worth something until she got sent back to Earth.
I have two quotes from the book I would like to share. The first one is "Betty," Liz says through tears, "That day at the mall, I didn't look both ways when I crossed the street. The traffic light had already turns green, but I didn't see it because I was thinking about something else." I think this quote described and brought out something to Liz because she finally realized that it was her fault that she was dead and that she was just blaming the taxi driver because she was to depressed and angry to really sit down and go over what had happened. The second quote was "I'm sorry," says Owen. "I'm really sorry, but this is the way it has to be."
"Why?" asks Liz. "Why does it have to be this way?"
"Because the living have to get on with their lives and, and the dead have to get on with their lives, too." After this Liz takes what Owen said into consideration and moves on with her life.
The rating system for my book is 1-5 one being poor, two being ok, three being, fine, four being, good, and five being, great. I would give this book a six even though a six isn't one of the numbers on the scale this book was amazing I honestly couldn't get away from it. It was so interesting, you just want to read it and find out what is going to happen next. I chose cruise ships as my icon because the cruise ship that Liz was on stays throughout the whole book.
In conclusion this was an amazing book I would recommend this to everyone, because it teaches you not to be selfish, it gives you a taste of life in a dead person's view, and it in a way tells people who have lost someone close to their heart that they will be in your life once more and they are watching over you. There are no warnings in this book except that it uses the word hell once in a while. So next time you have a book report, need a book to read or just carry, grab this book from your neighborhood library.

You couldn't have chosen a more perfect graphic for this book. It was the best book I read last year. I went right on to reading Diary of a Teenage Amnesiac, also by Zevin, and loved it just as much.

Ane,
It seemed like it was an intersting book to read. I think I would also like to read it. Your grading system was also easy to understand. Great job!

Phenomenal review, Ane. If I am correct, you must have amazing taste in literature. This book sounds like one I would love and I will most certainly read it. Plus, a positive comment from the school librarian only strengthens my decision.
